Reduce Your Carbon Emissions

Optimum Hips have embarked on a green policy throughout the business to do their bit to save the environment. Some of the changes we have made recently include printing less paper, using recyclable plastic cups and turning all non-essential electrical items off at the end of each day.

Optimum are in agreement that every little bit helps and offer you these tips to help you reduce your carbon footprint.

Turn it off

Turn lights off when you leave a room. An estimated £170m a year is wasted in the UK by leaving lights on unnecessarily. Installing just one energy saving light bulb in everyones home would prevent 200,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere. That's enough to fill the Royal Albert Hall over 1,000 times over.

Avoid leaving appliances on standby and gadget chargers plugged in unnecessarily. The average UK household wastes £37 a year leaving appliances on standby.

Turn it down

Turn your thermostats down. Reduce your room temperature by as little as 1 degree can cut your heating bills by up to 10%.

Wash clothes at 30 degrees to save energy. If you're not filling your washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher fully then use the half-load or economy programme.

Turn in

Prevent heat escaping by closing your curtains at dusk and invest in draught excluders. Approximately 20% of heat is lost through ventilation and draughts in the average UK home.

Invest in loft insulation and wall insulation. Heat lost through poorly insulated roofs and cavity walls is enough to heat around 2.2 million homes for a year.
